Desperate Money Making Tip

Throw me a lifeline – give me a money making tip. Well it really depends if you need quick money and how much. What will you do when desperation strikes you?

The Problem

This man on the freezing streets of Toronto this wintery day was in dire need of a place to call shelter. He had several problems why people simply ignored him: his open approach on the streets made him seem like a pan handler; he dressed too well and was well groomed not appearing in need; he seemed too self sufficient; the recession made most people avoid someone who asks for – a Job! All this young man wanted was to earn money – even if just a little, so that he could travel to Vancouver to be with his family. Obviously frustrated, but still looking for that elusive piece of work that will take him home.

The Quick Analysis

Well, let’s see what this desperate guy needed to get to his objective. Chet needed a warm meal, some immediate transport, a shelter, then perhaps a simple job that paid cash so that he could be on his way as quickly as possible.

The Solution

The warm meal was easily dealt with at the local Chinese food eatery (they often serve full meals at little cost). Offering my game plan, he took it and at the nearby YMCA headquarters, we got him some emergency help with local bus tickets; borrowed some work boots and gloves – yes, he was going to work for an outfit that uses manual labour to help people clear their walkways of ice and snow, run errands for the infirm and elderly and such. Yes, he even found shelter for free with this employer as they have a place set up in town for their workers because of the very heavy snow fall and cold.

A Money Maker Found

I did not expect this, but Chet called 3 days later to say good-bye still with $200 in his pocket and was leaving by greyhound bus. This young man was willing to work basically round the clock to make some extra money. I can’t help but think this is an example of the character that will succeed come what may, with just a little prod, just a little direction, just a little helping hand.

It’s a shame he went to another city so far away – I would have hired him if he was staying around town. Good luck young entrepreneur!
